Brief reminder of the situation: The Sudanese Victims of Torture Group, a member of the network, informed the International Secretariat of the arrests, detentions and fear of torture of sixty-one people in and around Khartoum at the end of January and the beginning of February. The whereabouts of the sixty-one people was unknown. New information: According to new information received from the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group, Mohmed Babiker Mukhtar and Dr Mohmed Suliman were released on 21 February. Case SDN 220197.2 Follow-up of case SDN 220197 and Case SDN 220197.1 The International Secretariat of OMCT has also been informed of the release of, Abdella Malik one of the forty-eight detainees on whose behalf we requested your intervention. Brief reminder of the situation: The Sudanese Victims of Torture Group, a member of the network, expressed its grave concern over a wave of arrests made within the month of January. Between 7 and 13 January 1997, forty-eight people were arrested by the authorities in Khartoum and were being held without charge. In several cases, families had not been informed of the whereabouts of the detained. On 20 January 1997 Dr. Nageeb Nagmadin Hassan El Toum, one of the arrested persons was moved from an unknown detention centre to the ghost house at Kober Prison. New information: According to new information received from the Sudanese Victims of Torture Group, Abdella Malik, one of the forty-eight people arrested, was released on 21 February. Action requested : Please contact the Sudanese authorities urging them to: i. take immediate measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of all people still detained and immediate locate their whereabouts if still unknown; ii immediately release all the detainees if they are being detained without valid charge or, if such charges exist, to bring them before a competent and impartial tribunal and guarantee their procedural rights at all times; iii. open a full impartial inquiry into the all the events and allegations of violations of fundamental rights, including acts of presumed torture, identify all those responsible and bring them to trial and apply the penal, civil and /or administrative sanctions provided by legislation; iv. guarantee in all circumstances respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in accordance with national laws and international standards.
