Human rights and fundamental freedoms are deeply curtailed in Egypt. A recent NGO law severely restricts the work of non-governmental and human rights organizations throughout the country. Freedom of expression is abridged by censorship laws and practices. Minority groups, such as the Copts, suffer both political and religious discrimination. Torture is systematic, and Islamic fundamentalist groups, such as the Muslim Brothers, are often targetted for repression.
