The UN Office for Human Rights welcomes the decision of the Public Prosecutor in the case of the journalist Claudia Julieta Duque

The Bogota office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights welcomes the decision adopted by a prosecutor of the National Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Unit who ordered that safety measures be taken against seven former DAS officials as alleged co-perpetrators in aggravated torture in the case of the journalist Claudia Julieta Duque.

According to the Public Prosecutor, those affected by the measure of preventive arrest are the former adviser and deputy director of the DAS, José Miguel Narváez Martínez; the former general director of Intelligence and former director of Operations, Giancarlo Auque de Silvestri; the former general director of Intelligence, Enrique Alberto Ariza Rivas; the former directors of Operations, Carlos Alberto Arzayuz Guerrero and Hugo Daney Ortiz García; the former deputy director of Technological Development, Jorge Armando Rubiano Jiménez; and the former deputy director of counterintelligence, Rodolfo Medina Alemán.

"It is very important that the Public Prosecutor advances in the investigations for the following, surveillance, interception of electronic mail, threats and harassment, among other illegal acts, which have occurred since 2001, and which were inflicted on Claudia Julieta Duque and her family, as well as against other defenders of human rights, journalists, members of opposition parties and social organisations", says Todd Howland, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Colombia.

Howland added that "justice must continue to advance with the investigation of these cases and that, it must in particular be ensured that appropriate measures of protection are granted for the journalist Duque, as well as for her family, witnesses and judicial officials, involved in this case".
