Inclusion of Cuba in US list of terrorism supporters unmotivated -- Lukashevich

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the US State Department's decision to put Cuba on the list of countries that support terrorism was unmotivated.

"The US State Department's report on terrorist threats in 2013 lists Cuba among countries that support terrorism for the 32nd consecutive year. We regard Washington's decision as unfounded. This is yet another proof that the US is unwilling to start a constructive dialogue with Havana and is making an attempt to exert pressure, including in the form of sanctions, on the 'undesirable' government," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

The Foreign Ministry said that "Cuba has achieved significant success on the anti-terrorism track". "The country is a party to more than ten international counter-terrorism agreements and effectively cooperates with the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the UN Security Council and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). This cannot be ignored," Lukashevich said.

He expressed hope that "common sense will eventually prevail in Washington's approaches to Cuba".

"The US administration must give up the practice of making unmotivated decisions, especially in such a sensitive field as the fight against terrorism," he said.
