Kremlin says Russian president website hit by powerful cyber attack Sunday

The Kremlin said on Monday that a massive cyber attack targeted the Russian president's website on Sunday but it was repelled.

"I am sure specialists know where the attack came from," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, noting however that he had not yet received any information on the attack since he accompanied President Vladimir Putin on his trip to Magas, the capital of the Russian southern republic of Ingushetia, and Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe.

Peskov also recalled that "the curious thing" was that Central Election Commission chief Vladimir Churov on Sunday morning talked about attempts to hack into the electoral commission's website, and at about the same time, "a very powerful attack" was underway on the Russian president's website.

"Security systems managed to cope with the attack although it wasn't easy," the spokesman said. "But the attack was quite powerful," he repeated.

Sunday was the Unified Day of Voting in Russia.
