McAfee CTO headed for federal cybersecurity role

Phyllis Schneck, who currently serves as chief technology officer and vice president for McAfee, has been appointed Deputy Under Secretary for Cybersecurity for the National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD).

The program falls within the collective of the Department for Homeland Security.

Since taking the CTO gig in 2009, Schneck has been responsible for overseeing McAfee's public sector business and the government affairs team.

Prior to her tenure at McAfee, Schneck has held various senior and information science positions at the likes of IBM, NASA, and the University of Maryland, among elsewhere.

Schneck also currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Cyber Forensics and Training Alliance, a partnership between corporations, government and law enforcement set up to combat international cyber crime.

She has also served as the Chairman of the NIST Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board for identifying emerging safeguard issues relative to information security and privacy.

In a memo published on Monday morning, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano didn't go into too many specifics as to what will be on Schneck's plate once she arrives, except that she will help "create a safe, secure and resilient cyber environment and promote cybersecurity knowledge and innovation."

McAfee has not announced anything about Schneck's successor just yet.
