Saakashvili summoned to prosecutor

Ex-president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili was summoned to the chief Georgian prosecutor's office to be questioned as a witness over a number of criminal cases, an official of the prosecutor's office told reporters at a briefing in Tbilisi on Saturday.

Saakashvili must appear in the prosecutor's office on March 27.

The ex-president will be questioned over the pardon of persons convicted over the murder of an employer of Georgia's United Bank, Sandro Girgvliani, in 2006. Saakashvili in 2008 ordered to pardon four convicts over the case. He was president at the time.

Saakashvili will be also questioned over the case of the death of prime minister Zurab Zhvania, the case of a special operation to suppress the rebellion of a battalion of Georgia's armed forces in Mukhrovani in 2009, illegal actions against the family of businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili and embezzlement of more than five million dollars from the fund of the special state guard service.

The official said the investigation into a number of cases was in the concluding phase, and there was a need for prosecutors to question Saakashavili as a witness over the cases.

Saakashvili was Georgian president from January 2004 to November 2013.
