Georgia has opened massive gunfire against the South Ossetian capital using heavy machine guns and assault rifles, the South Ossetian Interior Ministry told Interfax on Thursday afternoon.

According to early reports, a Georgian infantry fighting vehicle, which also launched an attack against the village of Khetagurovo, was hit by South Ossetians near the village of Avnevi.

The sound of salvos is very well heard in the center of the own, an Interfax correspondent said.

It was reported about half an hour ago that Georgia had launched an attack against the South Ossetian village of Khetagurovo.

"The fire against Khetagurovo is coming from the Georgian-populated village of Avnevi. IFV guns, mortars and machine-guns are being used," a South Ossetian Interior Ministry spokesperson told Interfax.
