Navy ships to support humanitarian assistance mission in Georgia

Two U.S. Navy ships and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter are getting underway to transport humanitarian assistance supplies to Georgia. These deployments are part of the larger United States response to the government of the Republic of Georgia's request for humanitarian assistance after conflicts between Georgian and and Russian forces.

Guided missle destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74), homeported in Norfolk, VA, departed from Souda Bay, Crete Wednesday and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Dallas (WHEC 716), based in Charleston, SC, and Command and control ship, USS Mount Whittney, based in Gaeta, Italy, will depart later this week with humanitarian supplies bound for Georgia.

The ships are scheduled to transit into the Black Sea and arrive in Georgia within a week.

Thousands of blankets, hygiene items, baby food and infant supplies will be transported to Georgia to save lives and alleviate human suffering.
