Kosovo government gives assurances regarding court for KLA crimes

The Kosovo government has given guarantees that it will make substantial efforts to meet an international obligation and set up a special tribunal to prosecute crimes committed by the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Besnik Berisa, legal adviser to the Kosovo prime minister, said Tuesday.

PRISTINA - The Kosovo government has given guarantees that it will make substantial efforts to meet an international obligation and set up a special tribunal to prosecute crimes committed by the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Besnik Berisa, legal adviser to the Kosovo prime minister, said Tuesday.

This is the guarantee that the prime minister (Isa Mustafa) has been insisting on since the very beginning because he believes that it should be implemented, Berisa said for the Pristina-based daily Koha Ditore, adding that Mustafa believed that the fulfillment of the guarantee was a question of political will.

A few weeks ago, the Kosovo assembly failed to adopt constitutional amendments that would pave the way for the establishment of the special court to prosecute KLA war crimes.

Victoria Nuland, U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, said in Pristina two days ago that Kosovo should establish the special court before the assembly's summer break.

Nuland said the United States was disappointed about the assembly in Pristina not adopting a law on the special court and insisted with Kosovo leaders that the court be formed as soon as possible.

Koha Ditore says Nuland has received assurances from the Kosovo authorities that the Special Court will be set up.
