Information War: Iraqi Forces Launch Broadcasts in Anbar Captured by ISIL

The Iraqi army launched 24-hour radio broadcasts targeting the population of the western Iraqi province of Anbar under Islamic State jihadist group control, local media reported Saturday.

On Monday, Iraq's security forces launched a military operation to recapture Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, as part of an effort that started in July. ISIL terrorists attacked the city last year and captured it in February 2015.

"With the help of the radio station, the military expects to appeal to the population to provide information on the location and movements of the militants," an Iraqi army representative, Lt. Col. Gen Abdul-Karim Mohammed Zobaie, said as quoted by the Bahraini Al-Wasat daily.

The army spokesman added that Iraqi jets had dropped "thousands of leaflets" detailing the broadcast frequencies and calls for the local population to tune in "to quickly return the territories under the control of the Iraqi state."

The announcement comes against the backdrop of a UN International Organization for Migration tally saying over 40 percent of 3.2 million displaced Iraqis since 2014 have come from Anbar.
