Russian diplomat says North Korea blast occurred 650 meters from previous nuclear test

The explosion in North Korea occurred 650 meters from the scene of the previous nuclear test in 2013, Russia's permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna Vladimir Voronkov said on Thursday.

The North Korean leadership's statements on the hydrogen bomb test carried out successfully on Wednesday "arouse deep concerns in Moscow," Voronkov said after the Vienna meeting of a preparatory commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).

The CTBTO experts said in their conclusions that the power of the blast "is practically equal to the explosion carried out in 2013, and the earth tremors are almost the same," the diplomat said.

The final conclusions based on the radionuclides release could be made either on Friday or on Saturday, he said.

At the meeting in Austria's capital, more than 50 countries made statements on North Korea's nuclear test.

Russia stressed that the solution to the current situation should be found at the negotiating table. "We called for resuming talks as part of six countries and stressed that it is unacceptable for North Korea to violate international law and the existing documents in this sphere," he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the respective services to analyze the situation to clarify this issue, the diplomat said.
