60 terrorists killed, 103 arrested in Egypt's Sinai in past month: army

Egypt's armed forces said Wednesday that 60 terrorists have been killed and 103 others arrested in Sinai in military operations after the ouster of Islamist-oriented President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

On the army's official Facebook page, military spokesman Ahmed Ali said 60 individuals were killed in fire exchange with the security forces.

The armed forces, in coordination with the security forces, have managed to kill, wound and arrest 227 individuals in all, Ali said, briefing Egyptians about the outcome of the anti-terrorist and Jihadist (militant hardline Islamists) missions from July 5 to Aug. 4.

Some "saboteurs" destroyed gas stations, blocked roads and attacked security checkpoints and police stations, the spokesman said, adding that militants' attacks in Sinai have threatened citizens' life and national security.

Also, during the crackdown, 102 tunnels connecting Sinai with Gaza through which weapons and drugs were smuggled have been destroyed, he said.

Terrorist activities rose significantly in Sinai due to the deteriorating security conditions after the fall of ex-President Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. Since Morsi's overthrow, Jihadists intensified attacks on security premises in the peninsula, killing over 30 security men and civilians.
