Gunmen who plotted terror acts for May holidays destroyed in Dagestan
Gunmen who were plotting terror acts for the May holidays have been destroyed in the city of Derbent in Russia's North Caucasian Republic of Dagestan, the information centre of the RF National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) told Itar-Tass.
On Saturday, April 26, a special operation was conducted in Derbent against dangerous criminals from the "southern" terrorist bandit group that "intended to stage a series of terror acts in the republic in the period of the celebration of the May holidays."
"At 16:00, Moscow time, law enforcement officers at the intersection of Narimanov and General Saidov Streets tried to stop a VAZ-2114 car. Two armed bandits riding in it opened fire on the law enforcers. One of them was killed by return fire and the other tried to escape, but soon was found and neutralised," the NAC said.
One police officer got light gunshot wounds in the incident. Pistols with rounds to them and a grenade were found at the scene.
At the same time, another group of gunmen from the same gang was blocked in a private house in Kollektivnaya Street. The NAC operational headquarters introduced in the city the counterterrorism operation regime. The house and adjacent territory were immediately cordoned off by police special force units. Citizens living in nearby houses were evacuated for the time of the special operation.
"Three bandits were killed in the engagement and a powerful explosive device went off in the house. Law enforcers seized at the site assault rifles, a multifiring shotgun and several grenades. The further search of the house and identification of the killed bandits were postponed until daylight hours," the NAC said. Operational investigation groups have been working at the incident scene.
There have been no casualties among civilians.
