Ukraine's Donetsk announces adoption of constitution

The self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" in eastern Ukraine on Friday unveiled its constitution proclaiming the region a legal and democratic parliamentary state.

The document, published on the website of the separatist region, consists of 11 chapters and 88 articles. It envisages that Russian and Ukrainian will be the region's official languages.

According to the constitution, three branches of power will be established in the region, namely a legislative, an executive and a judiciary authority.

The document envisages that the parliament head would be the highest official in the region and be elected by lawmakers.

The self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" could join any federal state as a new subject with the special legal and political status, the constitution said.

Armed activists in Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine established the "people's republic" in early April and held referendums on their future status on May 11.

Organizers of the referendums later announced that the overwhelming majority of voters favored their regions' independence.

Kiev has rejected the referendums as illegal and unconstitutional.
