Russian troops to take part in seven international military drills in 2016

Russian Army servicemen will take part in seven international military drills next year, including maneuvers with troops from the member-countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Russia's Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The ground forces' units and formations are planned to take part in seven peace-keeping and anti-terror military exercises jointly with troops of the armed forces of India, Mongolia, Vietnam and Pakistan, as well as with units of the armed forces of the CSTO and SCO member-states," the ministry's spokesman said.

As the Russian ground forces are trained next year, an emphasis will be made on further improving their skills to operate at unknown combat ranges, in mountainous and Arctic conditions, the spokesman said.

During the 2016 International Army Games, the main command of Russia's ground forces will hold six contests. Apart from such competitions as the Tank Biathlon for tank troops, the Suvorov Offensive for motor rifle units, the Artillery Fire Masters for artillery, the Experts of Troop Reconnaissance for reconnaissance units and the Clean Sky for air defense formations, the event will also include a contest for army snipers.

Last year, Russia's ground forces carried out over 80 command and staff exercises, including drills with the armed forces of Mongolia, India and the CSTO member states. Also in 2015, the Russian ground forces received more than 2,500 basic types of armaments and military hardware.
