Estonian consul meets officer arrested in Russia as suspected spy


The Estonian consul to Moscow on Tuesday has met officer of Tartu security police of the Interior Ministry of Estonia Eston Kokhver arrested on the Russian territory.

The Estonian security police officer was arrested by Russian FSB agents on the territory of the Pskov region on September 5, a source from the public relations department of the Federal Security Service told ITAR-TASS.

"On September 5 the Federal Security Service cut short a reconnaissance operation conducted by the security police department of the Interior Ministry of Estonia. Estonian citizen Eston Kokhver, who proved to be an employee of the Tartu security police department of the Estonian Interior Ministry, was detained on the Russian territory," it said.

"The Estonian officer, who was staying on the Russian territory illegally,had his pistol, cash worth 5,000 euros, gadgets for secret audio recording and materials used for a reconnaissance purpose confiscated," the source said.

On September 6 Kokhver was convoyed to Moscow and was taken into custody in accordance with a resolution of the Moscow Lefortovo district court.

The Estonian side has denied Kokhver's link to any spy activity. Arnold Sinisalu, Director of the Estonian security police, told a news conference in Tallinn on Monday that Kokhver was collecting information about trans-border corruption at Customs.
