Moldova does nothing for Transdniestrians' comfort - OSCE mission chief

Moldovan authorities do not want to win Transdniestria over to its side, head of OSCE mission in Chisinau Jennifer Brush said on Tuesday.

The Moldovan government has done nothing over the last two years to make the people of the unrecognized republic feel comfortable in Moldova, believes the diplomat. It should present attractive proposals, one of them being effective guarantees for the status of the Russian language.

The same tactic, the diplomat said, should be applied in the Gagauzia autonomy that has recently voted in a referendum for self-determination and rapprochement with Russia. Chisinau should attempt to speak to the people of the region often considered a problem in their native language, said Brush.

As for the 5+2 negotiations with participation of intermediaries from the OSCE, Russia, Ukraine as well as US and EU observers aimed to settle the conflict around Transdniestria, Brush said no breakthrough was in sight and going back to the negotiating table was the main thing now.

Brush did not mention any date of the next negotiations round saying intensive consultations with the parties involved, guarantors and intermediaries were underway. Predicting the future was now highly complicated amid the presently unpredictable events in Ukraine, she added.
