Court sanctions custody of man who killed 2 people in Sakhalin church

A court on Sakhalin Island in Russian Far East has sanctioned custody of Stepan Komarov, who opened fire in a local church last week, killing two people and wounding six others.

There were no objections to Komarov's custody until April 9 from his lawyer. The suspect voiced no objections either. He will be kept in the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk pre-trial detention center.

At around 14:00, local time, on Sunday, a 25-year-old local resident employed as a security guard in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, broke into the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ and opened indiscriminate fire. A nun and a parishioner were killed on the spot. The attacker was detained at the scene.

Police are investigating the motives behind the fatal shooting.
