Lavrov, NATO secretary-general to discuss relations January 28

Russian Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov and NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen will meet in Brussels on January 28 for talks on pressing issues and prospects for relations between both parties, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on Monday.

"Lavrov will rivet attention to the need to realize joint decisions on forming a common peace, security and stability space in the Euro-Atlantic region. Russia will call for continuing the search for decisions on missile defense, strengthening trust in military and political affairs, and expanding cooperation to react to common risks and threats such as terrorism, piracy, natural and man-made catastrophes, and Afghanistan," the ministry said.

"The parties will exchange views on key international issues, particularly on ways to contribute to the U.N. OPCW Mission to eliminating chemical weapons," the ministry said.

The parties will also discuss the current situation in Ukraine, NATO headquarters told Itar-Tass on Monday.

Lavrov will arrive in Brussels within the Russia-EU summit scheduled for January 28 and meet the NATO secretary-general before the forum is opened, the NATO headquarters said.

The meeting will focus on global international security issues and Russia-NATO cooperation. It is rather difficult to say if the parties discuss the situation in Ukraine, a NATO official said.

The Alliance is concerned about the escalation of tension in Ukraine and believes that only the peaceful political dialogue between the authorities and the opposition can normalize the situation, the official said.

NATO does not see any role in easing tension in Ukraine, with the exception of support to the political process. Ukraine is the Alliance's important partner and internal political decisions are the country's internal matter, the official said.
