Ukrainian national detained in Crimea admits guilt in organizing terror acts — source

Ukraine's Zaporozhye Region resident Yevgeny Panov detained on suspicion of organizing terror acts in Crimea has admitted his guilt, a source in the Crimean law-enforcement agencies told TASS on Thursday.

During his questioning, Panov said he had been detained by FSB [Federal Security Service] officers in the city of Armyansk in Crimea.

"He fully admitted his guilt," the source said.

Simferopol's Kiyevsky district court is expected to choose a measure of restraint for Panov on Thursday. The FSB insists that the detained resident of the Zaporozhye Region be placed under arrest.

Russia's Federal Security Service reported on August 10 that it had detained a group of saboteurs on the territory of Crimea and prevented terrorist acts on the peninsula that had been prepared by the Main Intelligence Department of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

The FSB further said that the terror acts targeted critically important infrastructure and life support systems on the Black Sea peninsula.

One FSB officer was killed during the operation to detain the terrorists. Later, a serviceman of Russia's Defense Ministry was killed as the saboteurs made a second attempt of intrusion. Criminal cases have been opened into the attempted terror acts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called as silly and criminal the attempt of a subversive act by the Ukrainian special services in Crimea aimed at distracting attention from Ukraine's internal problems and the authorities robbing their people.

Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko and the country's Foreign Ministry have rejected Moscow's accusations, qualifying as a provocation the detention of saboteurs in Crimea.
