Gazprom may revise contract with Ukraine

Gazprom's supply contract with Ukraine may be revised, deputy chairman of the gas export monopoly's managing committee and head of the company's finance and economic department Andrei Kruglov told investors in London.

Meanwhile, gas transit was operating normally though Ukraine had failed to pay its debt to Gazprom, he added, two days after Gazprom spokesperson Sergei Kupriyanov told Rossiya 24 TV channel on Saturday that Russia may cancel the discount Ukraine enjoyed so far, citing Ukraine debt of $1.5 billion for last year and current supplies.

Late in January, Ukraine asked for the 2013 and early 2014 payments to be deferred. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, at that point the debt totaled $2.7 billion.

"We agreed this debt would be repaid since we are allotting a loan and reducing prices for energy resources," Putin said. "But this is not the case yet. The Ukrainian side is asking for another deferment though this is not the worst thing. It is worse that Ukraine is also asking for deferment for this year's payment, for gas sold at a reduced price," Putin added.
