A decision to hold a referendum on Crimea's status in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea fully complies with international law and the United Nations Charter, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a telephone conversation with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday.

"They discussed the situation in Ukraine, including the March 16 referendum on the status of the Republic of Crimea. Putin emphasised that the decision (to call in the referendum) fully complied with international law and the United Nations Charter," the Kremlin press service said, adding that Putin and Ban Ki-moon agreed on further contacts.
