Ukrainian army opens humanitarian corridor for Donetsk residents


The Ukrainian security forces on Monday opened a humanitarian corridor for people to leave the cities of Donetsk and Horlivka gripped by violence in the east of the country.

Earlier, a similar corridor was opened in Luhansk. It is marked by pieces of white fabric. Besides, each person using the corridor has to wear a wide white band on the sleeve.

People are only allowed to take their personal belongings with them. Fire will be ceased within 200 meters on both sides of the corridor from 10:00 till 14:00 daily.

Those who fail to observe international humanitarian law with regard to civilians will be considered war criminals and prosecuted by international law, the command of the army operation the south-east of Ukraine said.

Last week, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council spokesperson Igor Lysenko announced the opening of a humanitarian corridor in Luhansk. After that three local residents were killed and eight wounded.

Since the start of the army operation in Luhansk, over 110 civilians, including two children, have been killed and more than 440 wounded, four them children; houses, hospitals, clinics and schools have been ruined.

According to the Donetsk regional health department, 432 people have been killed and 1,015 wounded in the city from March till late July.
