More than 130 people taken to hospitals in Kiev after clashes near parliament

More than 130 people were injured in clashes between demonstrators and the forces of law and order near the building of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada on Monday, the deputy and President Pyotr Poroshenko's adviser on humanitarian problems Olga Bogomolets said.

"All in all, 131 wounded are in hospitals and seven of them are in a heavy condition," she tweeted in Facebook.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said earlier some 125 people needed emergency medical aid after the disturbances organized by radical Ukrainian nationalists at the time the Rada was considering amendments to the Constitution aimed at a limited 'decentralization' of the country.

"One person has been killed, 125 others are wounded and twelve men are being given surgeries," he said. "One guard is in a coma and physicians don't give any forecasts on five more people for the time being."

Most of the injured, or 55 persons, were rushed to the Kiev hospital of the Interior Ministry.

More than 3,000 radical nationalists from different parts of the crisis-stricken country gathered for a picket in front of the Rada on Monday. At a certain moment, a combat hand grenade was hurled at the policemen who were sealing off the parliament building.

The man who threw the grenade was detained later on. He told the operatives he was a member of Svoboda and a militant affiliated with the Sich 'volunteer' battalion

Avakov apportioned all blame for this surge of violence to the far-right Svoboda Party and its leader, Olih Tyahnybok.

Prime Minister Arseny Yarseny Yatsenyuk, demanded a life sentence for the militant who threw the grenade.
