CIA begins shipping arms for Syria rebels

The CIA has begun shipping weapons to Jordan to arm the Islamic militants fighting against the government of Syria.

The Wall Street Journal quoted diplomats and officials as saying that the CIA is planning to provide the rebels with US weapons within a month. The weapons are being moved to Jordan from a network of warehouses.

Saudi Arabia is expected to provide anit-aircraft missiles, and other US regional allies are also contributing to the plan. The CIA is expected to spend up to three weeks taking light arms and possibly anti-tank missiles to Jordan. It also plans to spend another two weeks vetting an initial group of fighters and making sure they know how to use the weapons.

The US-trained rebel fighters are expected to arrive in Syria in late July or early August. US media have reported that the US military has been secretly training the militants with anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons since November last year.
