Iranian FM stresses political solution to Syrian crisis


Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif reiterated Sunday that "the only available solution to the Syrian crisis is the political one."

Zarif told reporters at Rafic Hariri international airport in Beirut at the beginning of an official visit to Lebanon "we stress that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is a political solution and the best way to curb terrorism is allowing Syrian people to freely express their opinions through ballot boxes."

As for the proposed Geneva II conference Zarif stressed that " we're not seeking to receive an invitation to the Geneva II conference but we would welcome such an invite."

Zarif's visit came following the arrest then repatriation to Saudi Arabia of the leader of the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the November 19 attack against the Iranian embassy in southern Beirut.

Majid al-Majid, a Saudi national died Saturday in Lebanon while in army custody after suffering from kidney failure which required constant dialysis.

Zarif said that his country will dispatch a judicial team to probe the details of the bombing that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut.

"An Iranian judicial delegation will visit Lebanon soon to address all the details related to the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Beirut," he stressed.

He added "we congratulate the Lebanese government on the major achievement of arresting the terrorist and we laud its efforts in this regard."

The Iranian FM pointed out that "Lebanon and Iran are facing many common challenges, such as terrorism and takfirism, and these problems are affecting all the peoples of the region, that's why joint efforts must be exerted to fight them."

He said "we will discuss with the Lebanese officials means to develop and strengthen the good ties we have."

As for the Iranian-Saudi relations, Zarif stressed " establishing the best relations with the neighbors is among Iran's essential principles and we're seeking to have the best relations with Saudi Arabia because that would positively contribute to peace in the region."
