Syria army secures Aleppo International Airport

Syrian government forces have tightened the noose around foreign-backed militants in the countryside of Aleppo city, establishing the security of Aleppo International Airport.

The Syrian army issued a statement on Monday, saying the country's armed forces in cooperation with the National Defense Forces have gained complete control over al-Nakkarin, al-Zarzour, al-Taaneh, al-Subeihieh and Height 53 in the eastern countryside of Aleppo city.

The statement further said that large numbers of the militants were killed and their weapons and ammunition were seized during operations in the area.

"This new achievement enhances the security of the area surrounding the International Airport of Aleppo and paves the way for eliminating all mercenary terrorists in Aleppo's eastern and northern countryside and it tightens control over the industrial city and the roads which lead to Aleppo city from al-Bab district," the statement added.

Elsewhere, in Jobar, Adra, Irbin, Mliha and Darayya in the countryside of the capital, Damascus, units of the Syrian army carried out a series of mop-up operations against militants, killing many of them.

According to extracts from a study by British defense consultancy IHS Jane's published in the Daily Telegraph, some 100,000 militants are operating in Syria.

The militants have split into some 1,000 brands since the crisis began in Syria, according to the study, which is based on intelligence estimates and interviews with militants.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly conflict since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
