German foreign minister: Political settlement of Syrian crisis nowhere near in sight

Political resolution of the crisis in Syria is not in sight yet, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Friday after talks with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"I hope that the second round of the inter-Syrian talks will lead to some results, which we have failed to achieve in the course of the first round," he said. "It is good that the humanitarian situation in Syria has improved. I hope that the Syrian parties will discuss local conciliations."

Steinmeier noted that Russia and Germany participated in the international operation to dispose of Syria's chemical stockpile for its further destruction on a United States' ship.

"This is another example of our joint activities in settling international disputes," he said.

The foreign minister stressed that Germany planned to take part in the destruction of chemical weapons on its territory as well.

"Earlier, we decided not to participate in this operation but we have changed our mind on this issue," he said. "I consider that we all bear responsibility when there is a chance to prevent the escalation connected with Syria's chemical stockpile. Moreover, we are one of the few countries having capacities to destroy Syria's chemical weapons arsenal."

"The destruction of Syrian chemical weapons is the only way to resolve the conflict, and nobody should hinder it," Steinmeier added.
