China investigates Norinco's alleged implication in chloride canisters found in Syria

China is investigating the alleged involvement of Norinco industrial corporation in chloride supplies to Syria. Spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Qin Gang said this, commenting foreign media reports that chloride canisters were found in Syria with labels of this Chinese company.

"China strictly follows the Convention on prohibition of chemical weapons" and fulfills its international liabilities," the spokesperson stated. "China is against development, storage and usage of chemical weapons. We intend to actively participate in its elimination further."

Qin Gang stated that China "noticed these reports and immediately requested information in the relevant institutions". "We will shed light on the issue in time," he noted.

According to some media reports with reference to Syrian opposition representatives, the chloride canisters found in Syria were meant for gas attacks in the country.

Earlier, spokesperson for UN secretary general Stephane Dujarric made a statement saying that UNO jointly with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was investigating the reports about possible use of poisonous industrial chemicals in Syria this month. He added that reports about combat use of any toxic substances "raises serious concern".

Observers say that chloride is not included in the list of substances, the Syrian stockpiles of which are planned to be eliminated in the joint UN and OPCW operation.
