Netanyahu confirms Israeli attack on Syrian military positions

Israel has carried out an overnight raid against Syria, which reportedly resulted in the death of at least 10 Syrian soldiers, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

"Overnight we forcefully responded against Syrian positions, and if needed we will use additional force," Netanyahu told members of his governing Likud faction on Monday, Ynet News reported.

The Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) strike against the Syrian army, which included missiles fired by fighter jets on the Syrian side of the border, came in response to a cross-border attack from Syria which killed a 13-year-old Israeli boy, Mohammed Karaka, on Sunday morning.

Karaka was killed by an apparent explosion of anti-missile fire. "This was a deliberate attack, not errant fire," an IDF spokesperson said on Sunday.

It is not the first time the Israeli military has retaliated against Syrian attacks. In March, Israeli fighter aircraft struck Syrian military positions after four soldiers were wounded in an explosion during a patrol alongside the interim border fence.

Israeli officials have said that Israel would not get involved in the three-year-long civil war in Syria unless its citizens or troops are threatened or harmed.

Syrian Foreign Ministry on Monday implored to the United Nations over the Israeli attacks on its posts in southern al- Qunaitera province on Sunday and Monday, labeling it as a "new flagrant violation" of the 1974 disengagement deal and the UN charters.

The ministry said Israel fired tank shells, mortar shells, rockets at Syrian posts, killing four people and injuring nine, while also causing big damages to Syrian troops' positions and equipment.
