France to hold meeting on Syria Tuesday

France's "major regional partners" are to gather here on Tuesday to discuss the Syrian crisis and bolster the diplomatic offensive to end the civil war in the Arab country, the foreign ministry said on Monday.

"We are preparing the organization of a new meeting with the main regional partners in Paris on Tuesday," the ministry's spokesperson Romain Nadal said without giving details on the list of participants.

The fresh diplomatic move aims to further mobilize efforts to peacefully end the Syrian crisis, he added.

According the Quai d'Orsay, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has recently held talks with his American, Saudi and Jordanian counterparts to shed light on developments in Damascus.

A harsh critic of the Syrian government, France has repeatedly urged President Bashar al-Assad to step down to start the process of transition in the Arab country which has been plunged into chaos since 2011.

Taking part in strikes in Syria last month, Paris called for a "global response" mainly via a political transition in which members of the current Syrian government and those of moderate opposition would prepare for a post al-Assad era.
