Syrian army destroys dozens of militants in Homs and Hama provinces — general

The Syrian army has destroyed dozens of Islamic State militants in the Homs and Hama provinces, Syria's Brigade General Ali Maihub said on Wednesday.

"Our troops focused their efforts on fighting the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (the Syrian subsidiary of Al-Qaeda) terrorist groups in the northern and eastern parts of Homs province. They delivered fire strikes at the militants' positions and fortifications in that province and also on sections of the Palmyra-Mkhin highway," the general said.

According to the general, the Syrian army thwarted the insurgents' retreat in the outskirts of Homs. Fifteen terrorists were killed. The army also prevented the penetration of armed gangs into some villages to the east of Homs.

In Hama province, the army delivered strikes at areas of concentration of terrorist forces. The militants have lost dozens of their men, General Ali Maihub said.

In the meanwhile, a Su-24 M Russian bomber has destroyed a Jabhat al-Nusra mortar battery in Syria's Hama province, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesperson Igor Kohashenkov said on Wednesday.

"A Su-24M bomber destroyed a Jabhat al-Nusra mortar battery in the outskirts of Kafer ez Zaita populated locality with a direct air strike," he said.

The Russian military launched an operation against the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (both organizations are banned in Russia) militants at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on September 30. The Russian air group includes more than 50 aircraft, including Su-34 and Su-24M bombers; Su-25 assault aircraft; Su-30SM fighter jets; Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters. Russian naval ships were also involved in the military operation's initial stage early in October. They fired sea-based Kalibr NK cruise missiles against terrorist targets from the Caspian Sea water area. Russian war pilots have destroyed more than 2,000 militant targets since the military operation started. Russia has no intention to participate in any land operations in the Syrian territory.
