Lavrov, Kerry discuss joint efforts against IS — Foreign Ministry

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry have discussed collective fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

"Following the opinion exchange between the Russian and US presidents on the Syrian crisis resolution at the G20 summit in Turkey, the two countries' top diplomats continued discussing implementation of the agreements reached at the ministerial meetings of the international Syria Support Group in Vienna on October 30 and November 14," the statement said.

"The sides emphasized the necessity of joint struggle against the IS and other terrorist groups and boosting efforts to begin negotiations between Damascus and the delegation of the Syrian opposition," the statement said.

The ministry said the conversation took place on Kerry's initiative.
