Kerry says Russia, US 'at strong beginning opening up possibilities' on Syria settlement

Moscow and Washington are currently "at a strong beginning opening up possibilities" on the resolution of the Syrian crisis, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, US Ambassador to Russia John Tefft and Celeste Wallander, senior director for Russia and Central Asia on US President Barack Obama's National Security Council, are also taking part in the meeting.

Kerry held talks with Lavrov earlier on Tuesday before meeting with Putin.

The US top diplomat previously visited Russia on May 12 and met with Putin at the Russian leader's residence near the Black Sea resort of Sochi. The Sochi meeting lasted for four hours instead of 90 minutes as it was originally planned.
