Syrian government to take part in talks with opposition in Geneva - foreign minister

The Syrian government is "ready to take part in consultations in Geneva within a fixed timeframe," Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said on Saturday.

Muallem earlier held a meeting with UN special envoy for Syrian Staffan de Mistura where they discussed preparations for intra-Syrian talks planned for January 25. The Syrian foreign minister reminded that Damascus is waiting for the United Nations Organization to provide "a list of delegation members from the opposition and a list of terrorist organizations."

"The success of political settlement in Syria depends on honesty in implementing UN Security Council resolutions that deal with fighting against terrorism," Muallem stressed. "The countries that sponsor armed groups should strictly adhere to their commitments to stop supporting terrorirsts," he said.

SANA news agency quoted de Mistura as saying that he is making all efforts "to ensure the implementation of all agreements on the Syrian settlement reached in Vienna, as well as corresponding UN Security Council resolutions."

Muallem noted that "Syria is committed to cooperation with UN special envoy and will support his efforts in establishing dialogue between Syrians.".
