Jabhat al-Nusra continues attacks in Syrian provinces — Russian Defense Ministry
Groups constituting the international terrorist organization Jabhat al-Nusra (outlawed in Russia) are continuing shelling of Syrian populated localities from multiple missile launcher systems and mortars, the Russian center for reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria said in its regular daily news bulleting posted on the Russian defense ministry's website on Sunday.
"In the province of Latakia, Jabhat al-Nusra groups conducted shelling of the settlements of Ard Al-Wata, Kinsibba and Rasha. In the province of Damascus, militants backed by tanks and armored infantry carriers attacked positions of the government forces near a pharmaceuticals plant in the settlement of Khan Sheikh," the center said.
The terrorists sustained big losses and were rebuffed to their initial positions, according to the bulletin.
Eight ceasefire violations
According to the bulletin, the ceasefire regime has been generally observed in most of Syria's provinces, with eight violations reported in the province of Damascus in the past day.
"Jaysh al-Islam groups used mortars and firearms to shell positions of the Syrian army near the settlements of Abril, Harasta, Huteita al-Jarash, Meyda, Douma and Haush Haraby. The Masakid Barza and Basatin Abu Jarash districts came under shelling from multiple missile launcher systems and mortars," the center said.
The number of settlements joining the process of reconciliation has reached 114 and the number of armed groups that declared their commitment to the ceasefire terms remained unchanged - 59. One settlement in the province of Homs has signed a reconciliation agreement, according to the bulletin.
Talks on joining the regime of cessation of hostilities are continued with field commanders of armed opposition groups in the provinces of Damascus and Aleppo.
No air strikes were delivered by the Russian air group and the Syrian air force at armed opposition group which have declared cessation of hostilities and referred their coordinates to the Russian or US reconciliation centers, the bulletin says.
A ceasefire regime brokered by Russia and the United States on February 22 officially came into effect in Syria at midnight Damascus time on February 27. This does not cover terrorist groups such as Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, both outlawed in Russia, and other groups recognized as terrorist by the United Nations Security Council.
An hour before the ceasefire came into force, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution in support cessation of hostilities in Syria. The document was initiated by Russia and the United States and won support from all the 15 members of the United Nations Security Council.
The first since 2012 humanitarian convoy has reached the settlement of Harasta in the province of Damascus.
