Seven ceasefire violations registered in Syria in 24 hours

The ceasefire largely holds in Syria but five violations have been registered in the Damascus region and two more in the Latakia region in the past 24 hours, the Russian center for reconciliation of warring sides in Syria said on Saturday in a daily news bulletin posted on the Defense Ministry's website.

"Jaysh al-Islam units, identifying themselves with the opposition, opened mortar fire on the populated localities of Nashabiya, Arbil, Duma, Jaubar and Haush al-Fara in the Damascus province. In the Latakia province detachments of the Free Syrian Army twice shelled the residential locality of Tauma," the news bulletin says.

Russia's Aerospace Force and Syria's Air Force have not been delivering strikes on opposition armed units that had announced the cessation of hostilities and reported their location to the Russian or U.S. reconciliation centers.

"The Jabhat al-Nusra and Islamic State terrorist organizations (outlawed in Russia) have continued shelling populated localities in the regions of Damascus, Aleppo and Hama over the past 24 hours so as to hamper moves towards the final cessation of hostilities," the bulletin says.

"In the past 24 hours in the Aleppo province terrorists opened fire from self-made artillery guns and mortars on the Castello shopping mall, the districts of Az-Zahrah, Al-Khalidiyah, Leramon and Sheikh Maqsood in the city of Aleppo," it said. "In the Damascus province the populated localities of Kabun, Bahariya, Haush-al-Fara, Huteita-al-Jarash, Zamalka and Marj al-Sultan along with Height 437 near the populated locality of Narb-Nafsa in the Hama province came under terrorists' shelling."

The ceasefire has been effective in Syria since February 27, 2016. It does not apply to the groups Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (both outlawed in Russia), and also to other groups declared as terrorist by the UN Security Council. Russia's aviation grouping has been delivering air strikes against the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria since September 30, 2015 at the request of Syria's President Bashar Assad. Since 2014, the US-led coalition has also been delivering air strikes against militants in Syria and Iraq.

Reconciliation agreements inked with 9 localities

Reconciliation agreements have been inked with nine populated localities in the Syrian regions of As-Suwayda (five), Latakia (three) and Homs (one).

"The number of residential localities that joined the reconciliation process has increased to 310," it said.

"Talks are ongoing with the field commanders of armed opposition units in the provinces of Homs, Quneitra and Daraa," the news bulletin says. "The number of armed groups that expressed their commitment to accepting and fulfilling the ceasefire conditions remained unchanged - 61."

A relief cargo - 500 food kits - has been airdropped from a Mi-8 helicopter to areas near the city of Aleppo controlled by armed groups. Six tons of aid, mostly flour, rice, canned fish and meat, were distributed among low-income families in the village of Boj-Islam in the Latakia region.

The ceasefire has been effective in Syria since February 27. It does not apply to the groups Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra (both outlawed in Russia), and also to other groups declared as terrorist by the UN Security Council.

The Russian Defense Ministry declared the establishment of the reconciliation center on February 23. It is headquartered at the Hmeimim air base, Latakia province. The center was set up in line with agreements reached by Russia and the United States to facilitate the negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition and to organize humanitarian deliveries.
