ISIS launches massive offensive in Deir Ezzor

The so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham" (ISIS) launched a massive offensive inside the provincial of capital of Deir Ezzor on Monday afternoon, targeting several districts under the control of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the western bank of the Euphrates River.

ISIS began their assault by launching airstrikes with their attack drones; this assault would do little damage to the Syrian Arab Army's defenses because their unmanned aircraft would ultimately be shot down inside the Al-Rashidiyah District.

Following the drone strikes, the Islamic State terrorists launched a simultaneous assault on the Al-Rashidiyah and Al-Hawiqa districts, resulting in a fierce battle with the Syrian Armed Forces that ensued for several hours.

According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Army has managed to repel the first wave of the offensive; however, the Islamic State is expected to launch another powerful attack tonight.

Today's Islamic State offensive in Deir Ezzor is meant to deter Syrian and Russian fighter jets from targeting the terrorist positions in east Homs, as the latter prepares to strike the T-4 Airport.
