Massive ISIS offensive spreads across Deir Ezzor

On Saturday morning, the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched their largest offensive of the year, targeting the Syrian Arab Army's positions across the Deir Ezzor Governorate.

ISIS began the offensive inside the provincial capital, striking the Syrian Army held districts of Al-Baghiliyah and Al-Rashidiyah; this attack was followed by a massive assault on the Deir Ezzor Airport and Thardeh Mountains.

For nearly two hours on Saturday morning, the Islamic State pounded the Syrian Army's defenses, hoping to weaken their forces before dawn.

However, heavy missile fire from the Syrian Arab Army and nonstop airstrikes from the Syrian Air Force would damper the Islamic State's contingency.

Undeterred by their significant number of losses, the Islamic State launched a second phase of their offensive, attacking the Syrian Arab Army's positions at the Thardeh Valley and Panorama Roundabout in western Deir Ezzor.

Intense clashes are now ongoing at a number of axes, as the Islamic State terrorists look to seize the provincial capital and its surrounding territory.
