17 killed across Iraq as troops battle Islamist militants

At least 17 people have been killed in attacks across Iraq as troops fought to evict Islamist militants from several towns.

Armoured vehicles and special police forces with heavy machineguns arrived in the northern town of Sulaiman Pek to reinforce troops who were battling militants for days. Meanwhile, a suicide car bomber blew himself up near a police checkpoint on Sunday, killing one person in Anbar's provincial capital Ramadi.

At a police checkpoint in Taza, a town 210 km north of Baghdad, a local police source said gunmen killed five people. In the town of Shirqat, 300 km north of the capital, at least two policemen were killed when gunmen fired on their patrol.

In northern Baghdad, a car bomb killed four people in the mainly Shi'ite Chkouk district. Other attacks were also reported around the capital. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for any of the attacks.
