Iran offers all-out supports to Iraq's new government
During Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's three-day visit to Iran, top Iranian leaders have respectively reassured the new Iraqi leader that Tehran will give full support to the war-torn country's new government in the face of threats posed by terrorist groups.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran once again insists on its full support for Iraq's government and nation in the fight against terrorist groups," Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri was quoted as saying by Press TV.
According to a joint press statement released by Jahangiri and the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, "the two sides insisted on the strategic aspects of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries ... and an inclination to increase these relations at all levels, namely political, economic, security, and business relations."
The two sides laid emphasis on the importance of stability in the Middle East and considered the threat of terrorism a menace to international security. They stressed that the international political efforts toward confronting this growing threat should be concerted, according to the statement.
Also, Iran's former President and incumbent Chairman of Iran's Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said that cooperation among Muslim states, particularly between Iran and Iraq, is a requirement under current regional and global circumstances, semi- official Fars news agency reported on Thursday.
Iraq's full security and national sovereignty are Iran's best wishes, Rafsanjani said in a meeting with Abadi.
The Islamic republic is ready for cooperation at all levels with its neighboring state. Rafsanjani was quoted as saying.
For his part, Abadi said Iraq has always believed in Iran as a reliable neighbor. He also urged promotion of Iran-Iraq ties in the economic, cultural and political fields, saying that bilateral relations are rooted in common culture and history.
On Tuesday, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the Islamic republic fully supports the new Iraqi government, local media reported.
The current situation in Syria and in Iraq is the result of " irresponsible policies" of some trans-regional powers and some regional countries, Khamenei said in a meeting with the Iraqi prime minister, Tasnim news agency reported.
Khamenei added the Iraqi people and government are well capable of dealing with the security problems in the country and have no need to re-establish security with the help of foreign countries.
He further described Iraq as a "great, important and influential country in the region" and underlined Iran's decisive support for the new government in Iraq.
For his part, the Iraqi leader appreciated the support offered by the Islamic republic in his country's fight against terrorism, and said he was pleased to visit Iran in his first official trip abroad after forming Iraq's new government.
Earlier on Saturday, Iraqi lawmakers approved Haider al-Abadi's nominees for vacant portfolios in his cabinet, including such two key positions as defense and interior ministers.
The approval of the two sensitive posts was seen as a major step forward in Iraq where an average of more than 1,000 people die due to daily violence across the country and battles with the Islamic State militant group, an al-Qaida offshoot.
