US Central Command chief discusses cooperation in Uzbekistan.
TASHKENT, August 14 (Itar-Tass) - Chief of the U.S. Central Command John Abizaid has arrived in Uzbekistan on a two-day working visit to discuss issues of the development of bilateral military-technological cooperation.
Abizaid's first visit to Uzbekistan started with a meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov. The parties discussed issues of cooperation not only in the sphere of military-technical relations, but also in the fight against international terrorism, religious extremism and fanaticism. Abizaid and Karimov also discussed problems of regional security in Central Asia.
The two sides held talks on the situation in the neighbouring Afghanistan, in the post-war Iraq, as well as on the possibility of Uzbekistan's participation in providing humanitarian assistance to Iraq.
On Thursday, Abizaid will hold talks with Uzbek Defence Minister Kadyr Gulyamov. The U.S. Central Command chief is also expected to hold meetings in the Uzbek foreign ministry.
