Genocide

    Upon ratification of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, Bahrain made the following reservations:
      "With reference to article IX of the Convention the Government of the State of Bahrain declares that, for the submission of any dispute in terms of this article to the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice, the express consent of all the parties to the dispute is required in each case."

      "Moreover, the accession by the State of Bahrain to the said Convention shall in no way constitute recognition of Israel or be a cause for the establishment of any relations of any kind therewith."

    War Crimes

    According to article 37 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, international treaties come into force once ratified and published in the Official Gazette, after which they have legal force equivalent to national legislation.

    Bahrain is a State party to the following main International Humanitarian Law treaties:

  • Geneva Conventions, 1949 (Ratification / Accession: 30 November 1971)
  • Additional Protocol (I) to the Geneva Conventions, 1977 (Ratification / Accession: 30 October 1986)
  • Additional Protocol (II) to the Geneva Conventions, 1977 (Ratification / Accession: 30 October 1986)
  • Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict, 2000 (Ratification / Accession: 21 September 2004)

    International Criminal Court

    Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Bahrain signed the Rome Statute on 11 December 2000. The Kingdom of Bahrain is not a state party to the Rome Statute.
