Russian experts to study Ebola virus, yellow fever in Guinea

Russian epidemiologists will study the Ebola virus and yellow fever at the Russia-Guinea Research Center for Epidemiology and Prevention of Infectious Diseases established in Guinea's Kindia region. The Russian delegation led by Anna Popova, head of the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor), took part in the opening ceremony, the Russian health watchdog said in a statement on its website on Friday.

"Rospotrebnadzor will study special aspects of the dissemination of dangerous natural focal infections (Ebola, Lassa, yellow fever, malaria, West Nile fever) on the basis of the center in Guinea, develop and test new tools to diagnose and prevent dangerous infectious diseases that pose a threat not only to Guinea but to the whole world as well," the statement said.

The idea of establishing the center appeared after the completion of measures to eliminate the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in Guinea with the assistance of Rospotrebnadzor experts. Both Russian and Guinean specialists trained in Russia will be involved in studying the viruses.
