Russian rescuers jet to Libya to assist in flood relief efforts

A rescue team of the Russian Emergencies Ministry has left for Libya to assist in flood relief efforts, the ministry's press service told TASS.

"On instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Emergencies Minister Alexander Kurenkov has fielded 50 rescue workers of the Center for High Risk Rescue Operations 'Leader' of the Russian Emergencies Minister to Libya to provide assistance in handling the aftermath of the severe flooding," the statement said.

The ministry added that the rescue team has tools, floating crafts as well as diving equipment for search and rescue operations.

Storm Daniel made landfall in northeastern Libya on September 10, unleashing gale force winds, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms on Mediterranean coastal cities. Numerous homes, hospitals and other important civilian facilities were flooded. The port city of Derna saw the worst of the devastation, after its two dams collapsed which was the main cause of multiple casualties in the region. According to the Libyan Red Crescent, the death toll exceeds 11,000.
