Russia's Aerospace Force has over 3,000 warplanes and helicopters — defense minister

Russia's Aerospace Force has over 3,000 aircraft and helicopters, with the share of modern and upgraded military hardware reaching 52%, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said at the ministry's conference call on Tuesday.

"The Russian Aerospace Force has over 3,000 aircraft and helicopters. Moreover, the share of modern and upgraded aircraft and helicopters equals 52%," the Russian defense minister said.

The Russian Armed Forces are receiving the newest Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets and Su-34 bombers, Kamov Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters and Mil Mi-28N Night Hunter, the minister said.

The role of aviation in ensuring the country's security and defense capability is steadily rising, Shoigu said.

"This is prompted by its capabilities for carrying out reconnaissance, providing cover for a grouping of forces and important state installations, delivering precision strikes and accomplishing special missions,' the Russian defense minister said.

Chief of Russia's General Staff Valery Gerasimov has said the Russian Defense Ministry will pay special attention to developing the Aerospace Force.

According to him, the Russian Armed Forces plan to purchase 70-100 aircraft and over 120 helicopters annually. In 2015, the Russian Defense Ministry received almost 250 modern aircraft and helicopters and plans to get more than 200 such machines in 2016, according to data announced by the defense minister late last year.
