Russian Defense Ministry orders new missile ships Buyan-M with Kalibr system

The Russian Defense Ministry and the Zelenodolsk Shipbuilding Plant have reached an agreement on new deliveries to the country's Navy of the Buyan-M small missile ships of Project 21631.

The corresponding agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Army 2016 Forum by Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov and CEO of the plant Renat Mistakhov.

The number of the ships to be delivered to the Navy under this contract was not specified during the signing ceremony.

The small missile ships of Project 21631 have a displacement of about 950 tonnes and are capable to develop a speed of up to 25 knots. They are equipped with the Kalibr missile system, the A-190 gun mount of 100 mm caliber, Gibka launchers for the Igla anti-aircraft missiles and the AK-630-2 Duet air defense gun system.

In late 2015, Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine Rostov-on-Don launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea to destroy facilities of the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria.

Buyan Class is a river-sea type corvette designed by Zelenodolsk Design Bureau. The design incorporates stealth features to reduce the radar cross section. The flexible open architecture of the ships allows for modifications according to the future requirements. The ship has a length of 62 meters, beam of 9.6 meters and a draft of two meters. Each vessel can accommodate a crew of 29 to 36. The corvette features better sea-keeping capabilities for navigation in stormy conditions. Buyan Class corvettes operate at up to sea state six and can employ weapons at up to sea state four.

At present, there are five ships of Project 21631 in service with the Russian Navy. Three of them are assigned to the Caspian Flotilla, and another two are in service with the Black Sea Fleet. According to previous reports, the Zelenodolsk Plant should supply to the military a total of nine ships of this type.
