Counter-terrorism operation launched in Russia's Dagestan

A counter-terrorism operation has been introduced in three districts in southern Dagestan, a spokesman for the operation headquarters of Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) said on Wednesday.

"The counter-terrorism operation regime was imposed at 7 a.m. on Wednesday (0400GMT) in the Khivsky, Tabasaransky and Suleyman-Stalsky districts. A search for the gunmen is underway," the spokesman said.

On Monday, two police officers were killed, six civilians and seven other police officers were wounded in a car blast at a traffic police post in the Derbentsky district of Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee said.

The car was blown up by an improvised explosive device made of two artillery shells with the yield of about 30 kg of TNT. The North Caucasus republic's head, Ramazan Abdulatipov, said this was a major crime aimed against law enforcers.
