Gang leader, three accomplices killed in Dagestan special operation

The gang leader and three his accomplices were killed in a special operation in Khasavyurt, a city in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan, the National Anti-Terrorist Committee told TASS on Friday.

Late on Thursday police stopped a car for checks, but the men inside it opened fire at the law enforces and attempted to flee the scene. The gunmen were later fatally wounded in a shootout.

The killed gunmen were identified as Marat Makhmudov, the leader of Khasavyurt gang, and three his accomplices. Two of them had been in hiding for one year and a half, the NAC said.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) department in Dagestan said the gunmen had repeatedly attacked law enforcers and extorted money from local entrepreneurs threatening to kill them or destroy their business.

An automatic rifle, a gun and several grenades were found at the scene. No civilians or police officers were wounded in the operation, the NAC said.
